Oil and Gas Drill Rigs
The following details information on oil and gas drill rigs.
Accommodations Module: Houses the sleeping and eating quarters,
along with meeting rooms and offices. Includes the Temporary Safe
Refuge (TSR) in case of an emergency.
Cranes: Allow for the transfer of materials to and from
support vessels and the platform. These are additionally used
to move heavy objects from one part of the platform to another.
Derricks: Often are mounted on movable skids. These derricks
drill the wells.
Flame Boom: Usually located on one side of oil and gas
drill rigs. This flame boom is aimed away from the platform and
is used to flare gas during upset conditions (a pilot flame is
maintained at the top for this purpose.
Drilling Muds Module: Area of the platform which is used
to create a compound of chemicals, water and clay. These muds
are continuously pumped down the drill pipe through holes in the
drill bit. This helps to cool the bit, while also washing the
drilled cuttings away from the bottom of the hole.
Process Module: In this area gas and water are separated
from the oil. The water is then treated and discharged into the
ocean.
Lifeboat System: In most cases there will be more lifeboats
available than required for the number of people on board. Once
released, these lifeboats will drop into the ocean, where they
can then be motored to a safe place or back to land.
Ice Wall Teeth: - Used on oil and gas drill rigs which
are located in areas which are at risk due to passing ice bergs.
This Ice Wall (located below the platform) is designed to distribute
the impact of an iceberg hit over the entire structure.
